Song Of The Day 12/22/2013: The Youngsters - "Christmas In Jail"

Holiday Barrage 2013: A somewhat casual but nevertheless on-message warning about drinking and driving from the pre-Mad Men era. Back then the presentation of habitual inebriates was more benign, almost cuddly. Like Crazy Guggenheim from The Jackie Gleason Show. They were practically stuffed toys. Nowadays, of course, drunk driving is properly demonized as it should be and the culprits all look lemon-faced and constricted. But back in the '50s they just had problems adjusting, and their antics were more frequently met with canned laughter than socioeconomic ostracism. This song is a reflection of that farcical standpoint. Sad, isn't it? Sure is. Anyway, Merry Christmas everybody!
