Song Of The Day 6/2/2013: Carole King - "Oh Neil!"

Answer Songs Week: Today's answer song is one of my personal favorites, and prompts this blog's second reference to Neil Sedaka's 1959 single "Oh! Carol" in less than a month. I've never been able to reliably suss out whether Neil Sedaka and Carole King dated when they were in high school in Brooklyn. As lately as last year Sedaka claimed they did. King maintains they did not. Furthermore, there was a three-year difference in their ages which, while not unmanageable, seems to favor King's notion. All of this makes up the least riveting he-said/she-said dispute in the history of entertainment.

"Oh! Carol" hit the Top 10 in 1959, the same year King married her songwriting partner Gerry Goffin (which it seems would further muddle the whole chronology since King was 17 at the time). Goffin penned Carole's teasing response to Neil's song, which is very funny if you aren't a little creeped out by, um, filicide.

Also, check out this video of Sedaka on Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show. Especially the cut-away shots of some of the ladies in the audience during the second verse. They seem markedly unexcited to be there. The last woman seems somewhat alarmed.
