Song Of The Day 5/19/2015: Mørland and Debrah Scarlett – “A Monster Like Me” (Norway)
Behold “A Monster Like Me,” by far the most messed-up song/video combo-pak to be had in Eurovision 2015, from the most Scandinavian Lee Hazlewood/Nancy Sinatra tribute duo in the world, Mørland and Debrah Scarlett. You can see for yourselves how they decide to absolve Mørland’s long-standing childhood remorse over… something, we’re never told exactly what. I’m pretty sure it’s graver than a fixed game of hopscotch. Beyond that I won’t speculate. In this winsome dual homage to Gosford Park and Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” video, the two of them exert a cold, calculating vengeance on less alabaster social archetypes that could be worse than death. It’s certainly weirder. This is some twisted, Ken Russell type shit we’re talking about here. Gaze upon the two of them as they give each other the sinister half-smiles normally reserved for siblings sharing a private dirty joke. As of right now this song’s the 7th favorite to win, and if it actually triumphs I will be equal parts happy and terrified. Well done, song of Norway. And don't pass the gravy. I don't know where it's been.
