Mixtape: A Dram of Deram
Deram Records, a subsidiary of Decca, was one of the strangest popular music labels in mainstream pop history. Here, of course, strange=good. In the 1960s Deram pushed multiple styles simultaneously: ornately arranged orchestral pop, nervous music hall, unfiltered psychedelic rock, spiked bubblegum and hyped-up British soul. This mix features 41 songs the label put out between 1966 and 1970. This includes a Cat Stevens tune that's one of the weirdest pop singles of all time, the Move, Denny Laine, The Amen Corner, Giles Giles & Fripp, Ten Years After, Galliard, David Bowie, and a bunch of people I didn't know existed until recently.
