Song Of The Day 12/5/2012: Shirley Bassey - "The Way That I Want To Touch You"

During my research last week on why searches for "captain and tennille" were leading straight to my blog, I came upon this cover of Captain & Tennille's semi-hit "The Way That I Want To Touch You," from Welsh national treasure Shirley Bassey. If Shirley likes the song, let alone sings it, then it's okay by me.

Although this isn't going to help my Google problem.

When The Captain & Tennille's version came out, I thought (at age 11) it was a bold departure for them. Their only previous radio hit was "Love Will Keep Us Together," and this seemed so sensual, so adult; talking about touching and living together. It was almost like discovering that your parents had sex. But then they returned to G-Rated form with "Muskrat Love," and things went back to normal in my world.

But then they resurfaced with "Do That To Me One More Time," and all that Victorian muskrat repression went out the boudoir window.

On the "Muskrat Love" tip, the original version (actually titled "Muskrat Candlelight") by one Willis Alan Ramsey is, believe it or not, actually an endurable piece. But then again it didn't feature Daryl Dragon anthropomorphizing marsupials with horrid keyboard squeaks, so it had that going for it.
