Song Of The Day 1/26/2014: Jools Holland - "Architectural Number"

Jools Holland hosts what is perhaps the most enterprising music TV show in the chronicle of the medium, Later... With Jools Holland, which you can see in the U.K. Over here you can only sense it. He's also a great pianist. I keep forgetting how much his work, mostly with Squeeze, wielded its power over me as a piano player. Nobody in the British school of piano playing (maybe Elton John) (and Ian Stewart) (Nicky Hopkins too) (two parentheses for the price of one) has such a grasp of New Orleans, which is where you have to start if you're going to be a rock player. "Architectural Number" comes from his 1990 album World Of His Own. It's predicated on a circular but irresistible hook, contains sightings of Squeeze's Glenn Tilbrook in the chorus, and avails itself of a fervent gospel choir, because it's Sunday.
