Song Of The Day 5/20/2014: Paul Oakenfold feat. Hunter S. Thompson - "Nixon's Spirit"

So, yeah, Literacy Week bit the dust, that's why there's no theme this week. It wasn't properly named anyway. "Literacy Week" should be about encouraging literacy. Like those punctuation pieces Victor Borge did, or the songs Tom Lehrer did for The Electric Company.  My Literacy Week was a bunch of songs with authors in the titles, like the Mountain Goats' "Lovecraft in Brooklyn" or Guy Clark's "Hemingway's Whiskey." They were all good songs, too, not my occasional "irony" plays.

But here's the thing: I had Literacy Week (sic) on the editorial calendar for at least six months, postponed twice, and I never had a single idea how I was going to approach it. Talk about the author in question? No, I'm not. This isn't the New York Times Book Review. Write each piece in the manner of the author cited? That was the best editorial solution, but to be honest, I think I would have exposed myself as a literary fraud. I don't know how I'd "write like" H.P. Lovecraft. I haven't read enough of his work. It'd be foolish.

Every idea I'd had after that point was dismissed immediately. Describe the song? Why? You can hear it for yourself, I just gave you a link to do so. Link the author to the musical artist? I don't have insight into that relationship at all.

So each time Literacy Week drew closer, I began to panic and freeze up; I had no clarity at all into what I was going to do with it. And you know, there's probably no worse time to get a case of writer's block than during something called "Literacy Week."

Anyway, I hope you understand. It was going to be a middling experience at best. And this blog is concerned with nothing except giving you the best short-form music-consumption experience that you can get for your mon... uh, time.

This song survived the hatchet of Literacy Week, and even then it's on a technicality, because this song doesn't just cite Hunter S. Thompson -- he's an actual contributor.

I'm totally going to lose my Bookworm Badge over this.
