Song Of The Day 5/3/2014: Penny McLean - "Lady Bump"
Penny McLean was in Silver Convention, the disco gang responsible for the #1 hit "Fly Robin Fly," the lyrical content of which contained exactly six different words: fly, robin, up, to, the, and sky. After their short-lived burst of attention, the three primary singers of Silver Convention split and recorded their own solo efforts, kind of like the KISS solo albums but less organized. McLean's "Lady Bump" hit #1 on Billboard's disco chart, but stalled at #48 on the chart everybody really paid attention to, the Hot 100. This video features the most flared trousers of the disco era. It's like the trousers have their own shoes, in addition to the shoes McLean presumably put on her own feet. I also like McLean's perfunctory soul shout "AAAAAAAAAAAH!" halfway between each chorus, her sole shot at proving that she could bring the soul goods if she really wanted to, or if the German production team had given more of a chance to wail out. Anyway, if you ever thought that Silver Convention was just an anonymous roving horde of disco cash-ins, "Lady Bump" will prove once and for all that they were actually three separate anonymous roving disco cash-ins. AAAAAAAAAAAH!
