Song Of The Day 5/10/2016: Sergey Lazarev – “You Are the Only One” (Russia)
I'm Ovision – Eurovision! 2016 – This is the oddsmakers' current favorite to walk off with the Eurovision booty. Muscovite singer and Adam Levine-David Duchovny love child Sergey Lazarev got his start as "the dark-haired member" of Russian boy duo Smash!! (СМЭШ!!) Just to prove their debt to Wham! wasn't just for the gratuitous exclamation points, they went to China to film a video for their cover of George Michael's "Faith." Now that Lazarev has grown up before our very eyes, he's upped the budget on green screens and handed this jaunty 12/8 cardboard valentine to the Eurovisionaries in charge. They appear to be eating it up.
You will note a massive dependence on simple geometric shapes in the visual direction of this video, particularly triangles. Normally I would let this pass but for the same motif surfacing in two other Eurovision 2016 videos. Gabriela Gunčíková from the Czech Republic performs "I Stand," while trying to extract her hand from a greedy wall of corner-y shapes and her palms are assailed with showers of tiny prisms. Amir from France, who for some reason I keep wanting to call "Le Weeknde," sings "J'ai cherché" in front of a backdrop of pulsating aqua-blue triangles while the cycle of love prances about. Protractors, it would appear, are in the hip pockets of set designers this year. Don't call it a comeback.
