Song Of The Day 10/26/2016: The Gothic Archies – “Scream and Run Away”

Halloween Week -- My daughter's childhood unofficially ended after we polished off the last of Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events books at bedtime. Well, she was still a child after that, but after completing such a massive literary undertaking it kind of felt like we'd both skipped a grade. Thirteen volumes is no small feat.

Now that I just found out the series is being adapted for Netflix (I am really cut off from society these days) I thought it would be a good time to revisit The Tragic Treasury, the companion album to the books recorded by the Gothic Archies. That's another project of Stephin Merritt's, also known for heading up the Magnetic Fields, who recorded 69 Love Songs, the early fans of which are now settling into middle age or senior management, but rarely both. The Tragic Treasury echoed the books' mock despair in every track, including today's song which opened the album. A wonderful cultish by-product of this effort was Merritt's appearance on a morning show in Atlanta, the effusive host of which had no earthly idea how to roll with Stephin's commitment to the glum:

P.S. Yes, Song of the Day is way off-cycle. I told you things were busy. Hopefully we'll get back to the usual cadence, or close to it, by the end of the week. Hopefully.
