Song Of The Day 12/14/2016: Clover – “Take Another Look”

Song Of The Day Outtakes 2016 -- This was cut from Mutt week, a hurriedly-arranged examination of the production credits of Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who brought the world AC/DC, the more palatable strains of Def Leppard and ex-wife Shania Twain. He also produced a few sides from Bay Area bar band Clover. I don't mean for the phrase "bar band" to be disparaging, but "pub rock" still sounds for some reason like a dirty word on American shores. Thanks, isolationism! Clover was best known for two things: (1) being the earliest incarnation of Huey Lewis & the News, and (2) serving as the backup band for Elvis Costello's debut album My Aim Is True. Huey sings on the bridge for "Take Another Look." If there's a harmonica in there (I forget) he's playing it too. Huey wasn't part of the final lineup on My Aim Is True, although he probably recorded some harmonica for Elvis outtakes. But he was part of what remains the greatest concert I've ever seen, which was Elvis' San Francisco stop on the first Spinning Wheel Songbook tour in 1986. Huey presided over the second half of the show like the suave game show host we always knew he had in 'im.
