Star Time #217: Rise Above It All
Last Monday was the 50th anniversary of Funkadelic's Maggot Brain, an album now recognized as one of the greatest psychedelic albums of all time. I'd been planning on commemorating it by playing the title track on Star Time, and decided to build a show of psychedelic-ish '60s and '70s soul numbers around it. That took some trawling through some psych-soul compilations to find some of the rarer stuff. I think it's a pretty good lineup, though it's a stretch to call the Solomon Burke song psychedelic. More like hyper-aware disco.
