Song Of The Day 1/10/2013: Willie Dixon & Koko Taylor - "Insane Asylum"

The closest Chess Records ever got to the Screamin' Jay Hawkins blues aesthetic was probably this crazed 1969 duet between Willie Dixon, who wrote the song, and Koko Taylor, the most dominant female figure of Chicago blues. "Insane Asylum" appeared on Taylor's debut album, which was also produced by Dixon. It's a song that's got troubles. Taylor's certifiable entry in the first of her verses sounds legally insane, a terrifying clamor of pain, delusion and madness. It sounds like she's about ready to go on Piers Morgan's show and talk about 1776 happening again. Oh, snap!
