Song Of The Day 1/22/2014: Gotye - "Learnalilgivinanlovin"

Before They Were Famous: This one's cutting it kind of close, since it didn't come out until five years before Gotye and Kimbra were assaulted by Cubist artists and forced to recriminate each other in the video for "Somebody That I Used To Know." But I thought "Learnalilgivinanlovin" deserved some exhibition because (a) "STIUTK" was such an inescapable, monstrous song that it almost feels like something his identity will always be wrapped up in, and (b) "Learnalilgivinanlovin" is just as catchy, even more for me, than that bilious xylophone fest.

Kinda love this song, to tell you the truth. Sound-wise it resembles Edwyn Collins' "A Girl Like You," one of my favorite singles of all time. And that in turn peers through Spector kaleidoscopes. This made the Top 10 in Belgium. In other places it was just left in that space in coffee shops where they keep all the pamphlets, until Drew Barrymore tabbed it for her very fine roller-derby movie Whip It. And then we used to know Gotye for the rest of his life.
