Song Of The Day 5/10/2014: Robert Wyatt - "Soup Song"

You know what today is? Do you know what today is? I'll tell you what today is. It's the 16th Annual Seattle Maritime Festival Chowder Cook-Off. Yeah, you thought it was Saturday.

For the ninth consecutive year my daughter and I are headed down to the Seattle waterfront, jaws chiseled and clenched, ice in our veins, the spark of hot judgment in our eyes. Chowderheads come step to us and they're gonna get adjudicated on taste, texture and originality. We're gonna take your disposable cups. We're gonna level our eyes right at you. You're going to smile in that entreating way and we're not gonna fall for it. You'll search our faces for some direction of how we're going to lean and we're just gonna throw it right back to you without betraying so much as a tic. We can't be bought, victual merchants of the sea. Your free cruise is over.

THIS AIN'T PROGRESSO. THIS IS AS REAL AS IT GETS.

Bring it, Fisherman's. Bring it, Ivar's. Bring it, Bell Harbor Conference Center. And Anthony's, man, are you finally gonna be on your game this year? You think skim milk and a hot pad is gonna save you again? No phoning it in anymore, Anthony's. BRING IT.

Punk-ass soup purveyors. We're coming your way right NOW.

Or about 1. Yeah, actually, I think we're going to be there about 1 o'clock. Depending on the train traffic and all that.

YOUR DAY OF RECKONING AWAITS.

BRING OYSTER CRACKERS.

I don't listen to much racquet jazz, but this goes alongside "21st Century Schizoid Man" and "Ant Man Bee" for songs that I love the racquet jazz component of.
