Song Of The Day 12/14/2014: Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey - "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window"

Song Of The Day Outtakes 2014: This was cut from last spring's Quarterly Covers Report, with a lot of reluctance. I had a reason why but Thelma put it through the shredder with the Social Security cards. Wilko Johnson is the beloved guitarist from the last great British R&B band, Dr. Feelgood, and an actor on Game of Thrones which I do not partake of. Roger Daltrey is, of course, from Hammersmith.

Earlier this year they released the collaboration album Going Back Home under what had to be bittersweet circumstances. Johnson was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer at the beginning of 2013. After rejecting chemotherapy Johnson was given ten months to live. Almost immediately he set out on a farewell tour, and announced that he'd be partnering with Daltrey to record his final album. Going Back Home came out in March of this year and included this version of Bob Dylan's album-less single from 1965, which Daltrey takes to with pleasant, venerable savagery.

You're gonna have to hold off on the farewell part, though: Johnson underwent some ground-breaking but risky surgery a month after the release of Going Back Home. After accepting honors for his career at the British Q Awards last October, Johnson told the crowd in attendance that the radical surgery had been a success, his tumor had been removed, and he is now cancer-free. That's a Feelgood story indeed.
