Song Of The Day 5/12/2015: Arctic Monkeys – “Hold On, We’re Going Home”

Quarterly Covers Report: Did you know that Drake, the Canadian rapper, has already had twelve No. 1 hits on Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop chart? He’s only one behind Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye, and only nine away from breaking the all-time record of 20 shared by Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. And he’s snared all these hits in less than five years. That’s just nuts. If he keeps up this pace, and why wouldn’t he, he’ll have had 48 No. 1 hits by the year 2020. Of course we’ll all be incinerated by then, but will we let that stop mathematical projections? Never, silly.

The Arctic Monkeys are a band I’ve never had any real objections to. They launched this whole in-crowd-in-remorse thing, right? A little less frantic and self-evaluating than Art Brut, a little more twitchy than any Britpop hangover you could conjure up. In a week that’s seeing no less than four covers of songs produced post–1995, their cover of Drake and Majid Jordan’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home” is remarkably touching.

Sorry, I’ve been distracted by professional obligations the last six hours or so. Tomorrow’s entry will be so much more SEO-friendly.
