Song Of The Day 12/8/2015: England Dan & John Ford Coley – “Idolizer”

Song Of The Day Outtakes 2015 – This was cut from Yacht Rock Underground Week which, given this blog's natural aplomb at resuscitation of plasticine artifacts from the 1970's, was pretty much a slam-dunk ratings booster. This peppy bouncer from the men who brought you “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight" missed the cut because, quite frankly, too much of this song runs afoul of the cardinal rules about yacht rock. It’s a bit jarring. Jolting, even. It’s in those sharp piano stabs. Those aggressive drums, that distinctly pulsing though tastefully restrained banjo. (I think it’s a banjo. It’s something in the right channel. It’s scaring away the rats, whatever it is.) By the time that mellifluous sax solo enters and the orchestra stumbles in the whole relaxation angle’s done for. It stirs up the heathen passions just enough to tip the yacht over. So avast, ye sword-thrusting pirates England and John, your rambunctiousness holds no sway in the bobbing brooks of our sedation. Nice song, though.
